[It's autumn and the air has gotten colder. Still, that doesn't keep Larry from bundling up to go to a park and paint and draw pictures of all the leaves changing color. He has set up his easel and all his materials, and has started a bit of a sketch.

Larry is so cheerful that he even sings - rather off-key, though.]

The treeeeeees are aliiiiiive with the sound of colooooooor...

Larry, would you terribly mind restraining your artistic excursions to the visual arts alone?!

[Wait, where did that come from?...

Ah. Yes, there's a rather different shade of red near the ground in the distance off to the left. And the one clad in it is rubbing his temple...]

[laurice]

[Larry stops in mid-sketch - although belatedly, and he winds up making a long crooked line with his pencil in his surprise.]

What -

[He turns and glances around - and finds the different shade of red.]

C'mon, Edgey, I gotta expand my horizons!

[truthsnomiracle]

While doing so, it's vital to be able to distinguish between a horizon and the edge of a cliff.

[laurice]

I'm not expanding a cliff! That sounds dangerous.

[truthsnomiracle]

[Edgeworth sighs.] I suppose I should have expected that metaphor to fly over your head. What I mean, Larry, is that you're as tone-deaf as always and only suffering will result from denying it.

(Including the suffering of my own eardrums.)

[laurice]

...H-hey, which means you're saying you don't like my singing! How can I get better if I don't practice, huh?

[truthsnomiracle]

No amount of practice will cause a bird to grow gills, Larry.

[laurice]

Singing is different from growing gills, Edgey! [He points with his pencil.]

[truthsnomiracle]

My point is that you learning to sing would involve an uphill battle with massive casualties, one from which you stand very little chance of emerging victorious. Ergo, your efforts are best focused elsewhere.

[Edgeworth glances at the sketch.]

...On that note, I apologize for having startled you.

[laurice]

What about apologizing for crushing my hopes and dreams, huh? Can you even do better?

[truthsnomiracle]

[Whatever song Edgeworth broke out into in response, it's in German. He's on-key and has both a pleasant enough voice to begin with and ample practice projecting it to a room, so he's a decent enough baritone for not having practiced singing specifically.

That smug smirk on the prosecutor's face once he finishes shows that he knows full well that the evidence he just presented constitutes answering Larry's second question with a "yes".]

[And this is Larry gawking at Edgeworth as the latter sings. Obviously Larry can't understand a word but...that's not the point. The point is, he had no idea Edgeworth could sing like that. Did his childhood friend really have more hobbies than he thought?

He has no comment. In fact, he feels like if he says anything while Edgeworth is busy singing, he'd be violating some ancient music law.

So he just...uh...listens...]

[laurice]

[He tentatively raises a hand and opens and closes his mouth like a foolish fish out of water.

That...was really better.]

Th-that's...

...

I'm gonna guess you can do that in English, too.

[truthsnomiracle]

Verily. ...For reference, I've had very little practice with singing in particular. I've merely practiced with music in other forms as well as with speaking clearly to an entire room.

[laurice]

Not fair! Why do you have to be good at everything?!

Prove it, Edgey! Prove you can sing just as well in English!

[Edgeworth pauses in thought for a moment. He could sing just anything in a foreign language and not be laughed at, but he has to take some steps to preserve his dignity here -- he can't just break into a rendition of the Steel Samurai theme song without that becoming the topic of conversation, for example. He doesn't much care for most popular music, either... or really, much with lyrics to begin with.]

[It seems, then, that he has to settle:]

[...Well, at least it's just as good? Certainly better than he managed at school by a long shot, and still on-key and backed by both the voice puberty blessed him with and long hours speaking loud and clear in court. He doesn't sing the entire thing, though, just a couple of verses to get the point across.]

See Larry run with a carnation pink rose in his hand and a goofy smile on his face over a long bridge without any safety railings. The bridge spans a wide but thankfully slow-flowing river, but he doesn't pay any attention to it at all, because he's determined to reach Aeris. He waves with his free hand and completely misses a slick puddle on the bridge.

We're talking about the Butz, so his foot slips from under him and jerks toward the edge of the bridge, and he flails once his balance is thrown off.]

Aeriiiiiiiiiiiii - !

[With a yell, he falls right into the river. At least he managed to save the rose by tossing it onto the bridge (and not in the puddle he slipped in) before he disappeared below the surface.]

[myfairlady]

[ ... aeris doesn't know if that's cute or alarming, but it's all the same when she hopes that he's okay. larry's a big boy now, he can swim through that nice river, right? ]

Larry! [ she calls out from the bridge. expecting him to swim up and yell back, she bends down to kneel so she can get a closer look, the flower still in her hand and held so close to her chest. ]

[laurice]

[Give him a moment - and he finally comes up, spluttering and gasping. But when he looks up to see Aeris, he breaks into the same goofy smile he had while dry and running toward her. He's also relieved to see that his gift to her was saved.]

I'm okay! [He gives her a thumbs up before reaching up to brush his dripping hair from out of his eyes.]
